The Joke's on Lawyers, (Indian Economy Reprint)

By Stan Ross

Complaints about lawyers is not a recent development. It appears that the first complaints in the common law were recorded in England in the 12th century, which is probably not too long after the first professional lawyers started to representing clients in Courts. In Ethics in Law there is a short section entitled \"How are lawyers perceived?\" It mainly deals with the public`s negative feelings and complaints about lawyers. Lawyers are disliked by so many people. They are viewed as \"hired guns\", \"ruthless mercenaries\", \"mouthpieces\", \"amoral\", \"immoral\", \"thieves\", and so on. The attitude is that lawyers will do anything for anyone as long as they are properly paid. The public also fears and respects lawyers for their talents and at times resents and/or is jealous of their status, power and wealth. All these attitudes lead to numerous lawyer jokes.
