Law on Essential Commodities
By
Jai Prakash
Law on Essential Commodities is an important law that mainly regulates the production and supply of essential commodities at reasonable prices. The law ensures smooth flow of supplies and controls artificially created shortages, hoarding and black marketing activities.
The Essential Commodities Act extends to the whole of India and because of the extensive complexity and range of problems involved, it provides for diversification of powers to regulate production, supply and distribution etc., of essential commodities made possible through delegation of powers and Control Orders.
The current edition of the Law on Essential Commodities has been thoroughly revised and updated and presents the subject in a wider perspective, referring to foreign law and cases where necessary. A separate chapter has been devoted to Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980.
