Language on Trial, (Indian Economy Reprint)
By
Chrissie Maher
Language on Trial will interest anyone who has had experience of the language of the law. In particular, it will be an invaluable aid for lawyers involved in drafting legal documents or wanting to communicate clearly with clients and colleagues. Through clear examples and logical argument, the guide:
*explores the background which has given legal language its distinctive character:
*discusses the need for plain English in the law;
*asks whether the law can survive without its traditional, grandiose style; and
*examines the practical implications of plain English in terms of cost and client relations.
The final chapter offers over 30 pages of guidance and practice in writing plain English, which will be of use to anyone whose job involves putting pen to paper.
Plain English Campaign is part of an international plain language movement which encourages organisations to communicate clearly with the public.
Campaign director Chrissie Maher - an ordinary working-class mother - has been campaigning for better communication since the 1960s. She founded the Campaign in 1979 to fight the tremendous problems created by the bureaucratic language, small print and legalese of official information. The Campaign is an independent, self-funding group which has had incredible success in persuading many organisations in the UK and abroad to communicate with the public in plain language.
